I’m going to the Solheim Cup!!
I have been following Women’s Professional Golf (LPGA) for over 10 years now.
Lydia Ko has been my favorite for about 9 of those – since she was 18. She just won the Gold Medal in the Paris Olympics. That gave her the “Podium Slam” – a term chosen for her after her Silver in Rio and Bronze in Tokyo. This also qualified her for entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame (the youngest person ever).
Two weeks later she won her 3rd Major Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland (called the “Old Course” and considered the premiere golf course in the world). At that event were a number of European players who will be playing in the Solheim Cup.
The Solheim Cup is probably the premiere event in Women’s Golf. It is similar to the Men’s Ryder Cup whcih is a group competition between the U.S. and Europe. Last year it was in Spain and Europe won it by the slimmest of margins.
My Mom taught me how to play golf when I was 9. She was pretty patient with me during those early years. One day as a teenager, though, I embarrassed her too much by throwing my club and she made me walk home 6 miles with the entire golf bag.
Later, I did get to play on the Coast Guard Academy Golf Team. We played at some really nice courses. But … old habits are hard to break and my buddy Steve (do you see yourself here?) and I had a competition ref “Flight Time” – tracking the amount of time our thrown clubs were in the air.
That was long ago. Now I really enjoy watching world class golf. In a couple weeks the Solheim Cup will be right in my backyard! The Robert Trent Jones course is a spectacular venue with all kinds of water and sand traps. It will be great to see many of the players who you see on TV … in person. I’ll be going with my buddy Tom with whom I’ve played many memorable rounds.
This is one of those events that will bring me JOY.
What brings you JOY?
